Yujin L is a growing South Korean artist who finds peace, comfort and inspiration from nature.

While she has only been actively exhibiting her artwork since 2017, Yujin L has already made an impression on people who have fallen in love with her style and expression with just only a handful of exhibitions.

In her picturesque villages, strawberries and eggplants grow on trees and otherworldly plants that look like huge lettuce are rooted firmly amongst the buildings and winding steps. One can sense a serenity in the scenery, which often feature chairs and the ocean, inviting the viewer to come sit down and take a rest in the tranquility.

As the viewer immerses themselves into the painting, one starts to notice the wanderlust developing as their gaze follow the never ending stairs meandering in between buildings, in a paradise yet to be discovered by travellers.

The paintings also evoke a feeling of deja vue. It feels as if you have been there before. It reminds you of a vacation you took, and the quaint villages you’ve explored. While you trace the brush strokes and take in the colours used, suddenly, you’re reminded of the exact sensations and feelings you experienced then. You can almost feel the wooden chair on the back of your bare thighs, enjoying the sea view and cooling down under the shade of an exotic tree, with a local cold drink quenching your thirst.

Nature became her muse when one day she went camping with her family in a forest far from the hustle and bustle of Seoul. A city where everything and everyone seems to be on the go 24/7. In the forest, there wasn’t a constant growl of city noise. Not even a sound of a car in the distance. After being there for a couple of hours, she started feeling a change. Her senses became alive.

First, she seemed to notice the smiles on her family’s faces. The way their noses wrinkled, and the way their cheeks blushed with every giggle. Then, she could hear her children’s laughter. Of course, they had laughed before, but this time she not only heard it, but she felt it. The little rumbles of excitement building up to bursts of unrestrained happiness was making her smile, uncontrollably.

Unbeknownst to her, she had been unwell. Despite the outward success of life, everything seemed to be in vain and she found herself falling into the whirlpool of a busy life. The absurdity and loneliness of life was draining her slowly, but constantly. Her mind had been ruined, and her body was sick.

The unexpected healing happened with every breath of fresh air that gently flowed from the trees, ever so softly, as if it was the trees breathing it in and out. The clean air seemed to detox her lungs and soothed her skin, both irritated from the pollution and stress of city life. The green leaves created a soft, comforting noise and the rippling water made her mind calm and relaxed. While she hadn’t been aware that her body and mind were at such distress, once she felt the relaxation spread through her body, she noticed how tense and unwell she had been. She was recovering and relearning the feeling of happiness, tranquility and vitality.

Yujin L firmly believes that for happiness, leisure and rest are essential.

“I expressed this kind of relaxation and rest in my own forest where you can feel the sunshine and the wind’s breath, hear the waves, and drink fresh air.[…]If we can walk the forest for hours or if we can smell the scent of the trees, we can get the will to regain the energy of daily life.”

And for this reason, Yujin L hopes that viewers can feel the power of relaxation from her art and to take a rest in her forest. She states that “happiness and peace of mind does not suddenly come from outside. It comes from the bottom of the heart, quietly and calmly. We are the part of nature. Nature frees our ideals and heals our souls. Thanks to that, we can refresh our mind and body by simply being in the nature”.
